Washington House Bill 1878 expands mandatory driver education requirements to more first-time drivers. Beginning January 1, 2027, Washington will gradually extend driver education requirements to individuals ages 18 through 21, helping new drivers develop the knowledge and skills needed to drive safely.
Washington HB 1878 phases in mandatory driver education requirements for first-time drivers according to the following schedule:

January 1, 2027: Drivers under age 19

January 1, 2030: Drivers under age 22
Drivers under age 18 are already required to complete an approved driver education course before obtaining their first Washington driver's license.
